Nine Twelve, Oh Five.

So, it has been a good few days. Last week was Vinod's wedding and then a day off, during which JP and I did all sorts of errands and stuff. I bought friggin three pairs of shoes like a ass. I went to work on Tuesday, and then the rest of the week I was in SQL Server 2005 training. That was an awesome break. Friday night we ended up laying low, watching a cool movie called "Hide and Seek" that was pretty ok. Saturday we went out and did more errand'ing, and then that night went to Sanford to the Willow Tree Cafe, which is an authentic German place, with Johanna and Rick. Of course, Johanna was very excited and was thrilled to have us eating Weinerschnitzel, Schpatzel, Blaukraut, Bratwurst, and drinking Bitburger. It was good. And then yesterday was Wonderworks, Fuddruckers, a tour of Festival Bay, and a movie. Good stuff. Oh yeah - today's random thing I want to learn: PostgreSQL.

Portability. Like a mofo.

Here's how it worked: first, I wrote sethadam1.com. Then I used the code to write Flip. Then I used Flip as the base for the next version of sethadam1.com. Then I merged the changes back into Flip. Then I slimmed it down and created Flip Lite, which I later used for the ft_blog. Then I made major changes, and as you'd expect, it will be the basis for the next version of Flip, which will probably not be called Flip. The problem is that this last time, I wrote so much that was bound to the sethadam1.com server and stylesheets I was worried that it might not be very portable. Well, it's not. However, it's not too bad, because I was able to hack it to work on OSNews in about an hour. Not too shabby, considering all the overhead of OSNews.

Katrina.

Can you imagine being in New Orleans right about now? How friggin scary that must be! I just heard that parts of the roof of the Superdome are coming off and the water is leaking in. JP's family evacuated and I admit, it's a very scary thing even just to know that they may not have a house, or their stuff, or anything. Even if it survives, it could be months before they can move back. Yikes.

Random Topic, Because the Pic is Cool

I have been busy lately. Things are definitely not like they used to be - First off, I have spent an incredible amount of time with JP, who, at this point, I think, it's safe to say will probably one day be a permanent fixture. She practically lives with me, and I'm happy about that. Then,as I rambled on about before, I rewrote OSNews some time ago. I added and tinkered and did more and more, and today I kinda decided that I think I'm done for a bit. The other editors are kinda getting territorial about features, so I figured "F it." OSNews is a hobby for me that I believe has a community dying to expand and pariticpate. If the other editors don't want to appease them, screw it. The site looks pretty damn good anyway. I got threading running on it, which was a challenge but was really really cool to finally see in action. I was very pleased.

SQLite

Today I built and ran my first successful SQLite queries. It's really easy, but the damn phpsqlitetadmin tool I was using never worked right. Finally I tried a new program and it worked like a charm. I didn't realize SQLite supported views, triggers, and custom functions. That's kinda cool. Of course, what will I actually use SQLite for? I use MySQL and that seems to work everywhere. The onyl place SQLite seems to be useful is for installations that don't support databases, and in that case, you have to hope they have SQLite installed or are using PHP5. Perhaps I'll write the next version of tihs weblog for SQLite and just say you need PHP5 for it to work.

OpenSolaris

I will probably not use OpenSolaris ever, because it's a much better server than workstation, but I'm still kind of interested in it. It's weird, there's no real need for me to use Solaris at all - I have Windows and Linux, and they get the job done plenty well enough. Although I am interested in a Mac at some point too. I don't think I know what I want. Get OpenSolaris

Need Sleepy!!

This has been a long few weeks. I almost forgot about my sweet little blog here, because I have been coding the living crap out of osnews.com version 3. I have pretty much rewritten the entire logic of the site, certainly changed the code almost 100%, and implemented a ton of new features outside the scope of the original project.

Bee

I'm running around a lot lately. I've been spending quite a bit of time with JP and enjoying that. I'm rewriting OSNews this weekend, and work is crazy between My Massey, the Citrix mess, and the new software program we're piloting. Due to data corruption, this post has been truncated

McDonalds & Coffee

Here's a great link about the McDonald's coffee lawsuit about which everybody seems to think they know the facts. I really find this case interesting, as everyone seems to side with McDonald's, and so few people appear to know the real story.Due to data corruption, this post has been truncated
