I'm really sick of hearing about Kenny Rogers and the pine tar controversy, and it's only two days old. For those who don't know, Tigers pitcher Kenny Rogers was spotted with an oily brown substance on his inner thumb in the first inning while pitching in Game 2 of the World Series the other night. The goop, which was later explained as "dirt," was removed by the second inning, and Rogers went on to pitch another 6 innings of masterful ball. But the story gets a little weird from there. The transition to a smart, modern, fancy URL system is complete. This is how it works: every item has a title called a "slug." The slug of *this piece* is "Slug-Transition-Complete." Now, your basic operations are read, print, and comment. So, the URLs work like so: https://adamscheinberg.com/blog/read/Slug-Transition-Complete https://adamscheinberg.com/blog/print/Slug-Transition-Complete https://adamscheinberg.com/blog/comment/Slug-Transition-Complete This requires no tweaking of Apache (other than permitting .htaccess files). There is no mod_rewrite going on here. It's all in PHP. Huzzah.

Debian has off-shooted IceDove and IceApe to replace Thunderbird and Seamonkey respectively. I am sick to my stomach that I think that they sound cool and have such great icons. This means I will want to use them. Maybe I'll just change my User Agent string to masquerade as IceWeasel so I feel cool. I really want to use these apps though. I'm such a sheep. I really am finding that there is a certain quality about free software fanatics and operating systems junkie which I'm calling "trial addiction." I love OS X and I'm happy with it, but I'm really interested in installing every new version of Linux and playing with it. And I feel that way about apps too. I love downloading them and just checking them out, even though I don't actually use them for any extended period. It makes the Windows registry a mess, but with AppZapper, there's no real penalty on a Mac. IceApe has me a bit confused though. I don't know of any modern Linux distros (save Linspire, which is commercial anyway) which bundles SeaMonkey. That means that nearly all SeaMonkey installs are post-sysinstall. A thread on OSNews popped up recently and I was very surprised to see someone argue that he didn't need anti-virus protection on Windows. I suggested that it's simply not worth the risk on Windows - viruses ARE out there, and it's plain ol' reckless to just assume you'll never come in contact with one. I have been thinking a lot about this Ice Weasel fiasco lately, and I've begun to see it as a failure of the open source aim. I'm really bummed out that it's come to this.
