For the record, I still think Rails is a fad. It's very cool, but the catch is, ya gotta learn Ruby to use it. So, this is my first post to sethadam1.com from Internet Explorer 7 (RC1). I have to admit, I really like this browser. Now, it will definitely not replace Firefox on my work PC, but it's certainly a hell of a lot better than IE6. A HELL of a lot better. I really do like the mini-tab new tab button. It's useful. I also REALLY dig the default RSS stylesheet. It has a ways to go with CSS still. Firsttube.com - the admin portion - actually rendered better in IE6. Some of the javascript and style create some weird uninteded effects, such as dynamically displayed divs overlapping out of their container div. Also, the refresh button KILLS me. It's on the other side of the address bar, and as far as I can tell, can't be moved. This is REALLY lame. I hate that. I sold my Macbook Pro the other night to a fellow geek who wanted to tri-boot Windows, Linux, and the Mac OS. I gave him about a hour and a half tutorial, and he actually kept dropping to the terminal to run commands like a true geek. He was very happy, and has since told me about...

Jenn and I went to my friend Benny's wedding this weekend. I was the best man, I gave a LONG roast speech. It was a good time. I got to catch up with a bunch of my old high school buddies, and I kinda wonder why I don't stay in touch with them more. More on that, and pictures, soon. Also, I listed my Macbook Pro on Craig's List. If it sells, I'm buying a new iMac.

I'm playing with a new look and feel for my weblog. For now, I'm just playing with the CSS, no HTML changes (except for the addition of a new DIV for the third column). This is what I've got so far, and although it's a little bland from a color standpoint, I'm happy with the basic layout. But I'd love some thoughts: link has been removed, the page is no longer active

Okay, I think I'm pretty happy with the code running sethadam1.com. It's not perfect, there are some things I'd like to do to it, however, I'm going to declare a "freeze" and package this as Small Axe 0.4. Now, in truth, this build will have all of the features I had planned for 0.4, 0.5, 0.6 and probably 0.7, but since I haven't released anything since 0.3, I think I'll tag it 0.4. Then I'll try to get to 0.5, a bug fix build, quickly. 0.4 will be another MySQL only build. I will reinstate the flatfile and SQLite support as we approach 1.0. So let's aim for a late September 0.4 final build. There's A LOT of work that will have to go into making this code portable again, so I'm going to take my time.

A friend of mine is considering a new computer. I have suggested a Mac Mini or an iMac. He actually bought a Mac back in the Jaguar days and then returned it because he couldn't figure it out. But he's agreed to give me one hour to prove a Mac is the way to go. So, what should I show him? I've decided to highlight application installation/removal, moving/managing open files, iLife integration, keyboard shortcuts, incredible apps such as iPhoto, the file system structure (backup your home dir, all your crucial data is there), and of course, Spotlight. Am I forgetting anything important?

Although its been present for a long time in the database (and to some extent, in the PHP), I've never really gotten around to making "thread locking" work right. Until now. I wrote the piece on Israel earlier because it was on my mind, not because I wanted to start a debate or turn my blog into an anti-Israel platform. So when I saw the tide turning that way, I locked the thread administratively. It wasn't pretty, it just spit out undescribed errors. So I've finally gotten around to spiffing up the UI, and it now displays on the front page, as well as the comment page, that the thread is locked. It won't accept new comments. I'm also doing a quick audit for additional features needed.

Jenn and I bought our first house. It's an awesome house located only about a mile from where we currently live. I'm really psyched to move in. We close on Sept 20. This makes three properties for us. The goal is to replace this house using profit from one of our condos in about 3-5 years. And then one day, retire and live on the income from renting all of our properties. In the meantime, though, it will be nice to have the extra room!
