Deltona, and some other crap

So, I'm living in Deltona now. I'm here, moved in (mostly), and I'm going to be keeping up to date again. I'm finishing up tCH 0.4, which has ported the back-end to MySQL. I'm eventually going to release FL2, I guess without language packs, since no one has done them. More later, I'm tired.

gmail, phones, and moe., and blogging

1. gmail is incredible. since my sethadam1.com account gets nothing but Russian spam now, I've directed it to my gmail account instead of my main account. I love the label system and the threaded conversations. 2. I'm so over my cell phone saga with AT&T TDMA, AT&T GSM, and Nextel. I've got the i830 which is cool but a ripoff, and f it, I'm keeping the son of a bitch. Plus, Nextel works, even in Deltona. 3. moe. was a good time. It was a money show, and I met this chick H, who was a blast, and we're going to hang out sometime. I'm psyched, because she was actually a lot of fun. More on that, I hope. 4. Blogging is tough. You have to actually have something to say, and I'm pretty proud to say I don't. I code a bunch of shit, but rarely have astute observations. I coded this whole moderation thing, and then never actually used it for anything. After all, nobody really wants to test it, I think. I just had a good time doing it. moderate() will be in Flip 4, and that will be that.

ft Classic Now Unmaintained

Just wanted to let you all know, as I mentioned before, sethadam1.com is becoming my personal site. Well, unless somethig really exxciting comes along, I am officially calling sethadam1.com/classic "unmaintained." There are lots of bugs in the code right now - they aren't bugs in "Flip," which runs it, as much as lots of customizations that don't work since I moved the files into the /classic directory. The site gets very little traffic these days, and I'm simply not as motivated, so, this is it. As of today, this portion of sethadam1.com is officially "as is." Keep on sharin in the groove.

Leaps and Bounds

I spent a while writing new stuff for the ft_blog over the last two days. As I mentioned, commenting and moderation. I added in descriptive moderation too. All comments now start at one point, and positive mods add one point, negatives take one off, and kill subtracts 6. All comments below 1 are hidden, and there is a max value of 5 per comment. I may play with the math, but for now, that's how it works. I'd love to open up moderation for everyone to play with, since this is essentially how moderation will work with Flip 4, the problem is, without registered admins, there's really no way to prevent multiple votes except with cookies, which are easy to refuse. I have to think about this one if I want to make it available to all. For now, I've added the score and description to each comment for everyone to see.

Commentification

Some call it ADHD, but I call it ambition. At least, that's what I tell myself. The ft_blog now has commenting. Not just commenting, but elementary moderation. When logged in as an admin, you can mod a comment up, which currently doesn't do much, reset to zero, or mod down, which will hide the comment. I'm playing with displaying the scores of the comments, or possibly using text labels a la Slashdot and k5. This system is pretty flexible, I could open it up to additional moderators or even use open public moderation. It works pretty well. However, this is one of those things that I'm not going to backport to Flip Lite. Flip Lite is lite. It is supposed to be simple and easy. So it will not inherit commenting and therefore, moderation. That will be reserved for Flip 4. Interestingly, this is the first thing I've written in a long time that is pretty specific for ft. See, it builds on the old ft archives, and was built up from ft1.2 with LOTS of customization, so I will not be upgrading anytime soon. Instead, I'll write features just for good ol ft. So, have at it, if you...

Whoops.

Forgot about you there for a minute, Mr. Blog. See, the concept of a blog is a funny one, because it acts like a diary, but it's a public diary. But as the livejournal/blogger craze continues, what you find is, well, the diaries are less diaries and more pontificating. Like someone else actually gives a flying shit about your blog. What could be cool, though, and I'm thinking about this, is something called (something like) "Flip Collaboration." This is where, I guess like Trackback, you can have other people's Flip feeds integrated into your own. Simply plug in their collaboration URL (which is probably simply a link to an RSS feed updated not more than every hour or so) and your Flip feed includes the items in their feed they've chosen to share. Maybe that is trackback. Hey, don't get me wrong, it's still a useless blog, but at least it's your friends worthless ramblings too.

PHISH CALLS IT QUITS

Well, I'm very sad to report that Phish has decided to call it quits. This is sad, but also kind of exciting. Imagine what will happen when the guys unlink themselves from the Phish chains and start expanding into ever wider territory. On the other hand, what will become of Jennifer Dances and other Phish rarities? Are they to die a lonely death? What will be the last song? A predictable YEM, or maybe something crazy random, like, say Lushington? What if it was something middle ground, like Squirming Coil? With the close of the tour, I think, will be demise of sethadam1.com's phish content. From that point on out, I think ft will become my personal site, and the phish stuff will just have to slowly fade away. There are better sites for that. Sigh.

weekend adventures

interesting weekend. Yesterday, JF came to town with his band, Killswitch Engage. I swung on down to HOB around 6:30 and we got some dinner. The nwe went back and hung out on the bus and around the backstage area until the show. I met James Murphy of Death/Obituary/Disencarnate fame, which was pretty crazy, and then watched the show from the stage! The whole thing was pretty amazing, to see that F's pursuits are paying off. Holy shit. Pretty crazy. Then today I listed all my Mom's old audio book cd's on ebay, and now I'm scouring the house for more shit to sell. I wouldn't mind slapping all the crap I don't want on there, just to get rid of some of it. Not a bad way to unload extra shit and maybe make some cash.

Rivet Boy

The "codename" for Flip Lite 2 is, and has been for some time, "Red Squirrel." Well, the development version - meaning the post-2.0 final code, which will be split away today, is now called "Rivet Boy." Why Rivet Boy? Because I just learned that my grandfather's first job at Emerson electronics, where he eventually became the lead New York salesman, was .... you guessed it. A rivert boy - a lost art, apparently - used to rivet the tubes into the wooden frames in the first TV sets. Can you imagine such a thing today? A TV in a wooden box? A 13 inch back and white screen? It's obscene. Anyway, Red Squirrel will be forked out of FL-devel today, and Rivet Boy will be born. Long live Rivet Boy.
